Action 1: Thank Senators Warner and Klobuchar
Although Facebook has pledged greater transparency in the purchase of political ads, Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) want to make those pledges mandatory. The proposed legislation would require web platforms like Facebook and Google to disclose more information about political ads and their buyers. If passed, any web platform with more than one million users must publicly disclose the names of individuals and organizations that spend more than $10k on election ads. Social media platforms reach larger audiences than broadcasters, but are currently not subject to the same disclosure requirements. Facebook recently revealed that Russian companies bought more than 3,000 political ads during the 2016 presidential election. Let's thank Senators Warner and Klobuchar for authoring this legislation and working hard to keep our elections clean!

ACTION 2: Fight for the integrity of elections in California
CA was one of 21 States notified by the Department of Homeland Security (after a 10 month delay) that it was the target of Russian Hacking. Contact Alex Padilla (D) and ask what he has done to investigate the 2016 election hacking and what he plans to do about protecting the elections from interference in the future.

ACTION 5: Select a Committee and Independent Commission
Congress CAN, without signature, appoint an Independent Commission OR Select Committee to Investigate. Both are Bipartisan. This is done by Senate Resolution (or House Resolution for a House Special Committee). (Note: the Appropriations Bill for the funding of the Independent Commission does need Presidential signature).
DOJ Special Counsel is a good first step. (Note: The FBI is the Investigative arm of the DOJ).
However, we can still write our reps (in both the House and the Senate) asking for BOTH an Independent Commission and a Select Committee NOW!
Dear Senator/Rep _____:
I am your constituent and I strongly urge you to demand and Independent Investigation into the Russian interference into the 2016 Presidential election.

Action 6: Support Herman Bell, 69-year old grandfather, former member of the Black Panther Party, and political prisoner
Many of us have been horrified at the recent beating of political prisoner Herman Bell, a 69-year old grandfather and former member of the Black Panther Party who has been incarcerated for more than 40 years. In an unprovoked attack, five correction officers at Comstock Prison in upstate New York beat, kicked and maced Herman, slamming his head into the concrete and leaving him with two broken ribs, severe head trauma and damage to his eyes.
1) Write to Herman to let him know that he has community support, and to let the authorities know that we are concerned for him.
